Copyright friendly images for real estate agents:
What photos are you allowed to use for your #realestate #social media? Let’s take a step back first and look at something that is called ‘Creative Commons’ which deals with copyright friendly media.
#CreativeCommons and Copyright:
This is something I often teach when running #socialmedia workshops for the #realestate industry.
It simply means media (images, videos, music) that has different levels of copyright attached to them.
It’s not really good enough to say (image not ours) as I recently saw on a real estate agents Facebook page. Where has that image or video come from so you can attribute that photographer/artist appropriately?
To find out more details of the categories: Go to this website: http://creativecommons.org.au/materials/factsheets/cc-licences.pdf This is a fact sheet from creative commons (a global non-for-profit organisation).
Here are the categories listed:
Attribution: (AR) You must credit the creator, the title of the work and the license the work is under.
Noncommercial (NC) Any use of the work must be for educational purposes (so this means it isn’t allowed to be used for advertising and for-profit uses.
Nonderivative Works (ND) No re-mixing allowed. If you would like to crop the photo, or maniupulate this in any way, you will need to get permission.
Share Alike: SA Any material produced under these terms (and then altered) must have the same terms applied. I.e. you can’t just claim it as your own images as it is allowed to be shareable.
Tip: Each of these also has different combinations (see the second page of the CC License sheet).
Where to start finding #creativecommons media?
Creative Commons Search Tool:
There is also Creative Commons Search found here: https://ccsearch.creativecommons.org/ This is not an exhaustive list of all material that is creative commons-friendly so please keep that in mind.
You can add the CC Search to your browser (see image below)
Questions to ask:
- Do you want to change the media (Modify, adapt, or build upon)
- Do you want to just use the image as it is?
You can always use ‘Google’ to start with as a search engine as there are usage rights filters that shows the correct images to use. I think the biggest shock people have is, there are not as many images, once you apply the correct filter.
Step 1: Type in your search term into Google.
Step 2: Select images.
Step 3: Select ‘Tools’ – top right hand corner.
Step 4: Select Usage rights (under Images).
Step 5: Here are your two categories you can use when using these images for social media and your real estate agency:
- Labelled for reuse with modification (this means cropping the image, adding a text overlay etc).
- Labelled for reuse
